Publications of Steven’s work include:

Steven draws inspiration from philosophers such as Deleuze and Derrida who prioritize alterity — or otherness. Prioritizing alterity is attempting to remain open to what presents itself as itself. Such a position entails that any notion of a transparent ego should be postponed to a later time. Deleuze, following this reasoning consequently, even deconstructs the very idea of a conceptual “architecture” in thinking. Mille Plateux, or A Thousand Plateaus (written together with Guattari in 1980) takes shape as a “rhizome,” allowing for the immediate connection between any of its points and therefore bypassing the idea of verticality or gravity. This makes it demanding to read. In photographic work a philosophy of difference results in the establishment of new relations between form, shape, color and cultural artifacts such as (personal) identity, gender, etc. Thus, alterity can be considered as a creative engine running underneath Steven’s work.

A second line of interest is graphical art from the 1920s that centers around the Idea of Modernism. Avant-garde photographers such as Jean Moral (click the link to see images), Aurel Bauh, Marianne Breslauer, André Papillon, Florence Henri, Fernand Léger, Ergy Landau, Francois Kollar, Germaine Krull, André Steiner and many more, to this day influence art with their search for new composition, camera angles and subject matter, guided by new technology and a brilliant sense for futurism.

Equipment: Steven can deliver several photographic styles because of a broad collection of (prime) lenses — ranging from 24 to 400mm — and a substantial lighting kit. He has a number of portable flashes and three studio strobes which can be used on location (both indoors and outdoors). Several softboxes (40-180cm), reflectors, grids and beauty dishes make different qualities of light possible, ranging from specular to ultrasoft and from harsh to ultra-wrapping. Feel free to ask Steven something about his gear or an assignment.
